The Son of the Late Chief Moshood Kashimawo Abiola, who emerged as the Winner of the Nigeria 1993 Presidential election, and was annulled by the then government, his son Alhaji Lekan Abiola has praised the ex President of Nigeria, President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan for his wonderful work towards recognizing the sacrifices both parents made for the nation and support for the MKO family .
This was revealed on Wednesday 4th June, 2025,during Press Conference held at the MKO Abiola Residence at Ikeja, by the League of June12 Movement, on a suppose date that was to commemorate the 26th years remembrance of late Mrs. Kudirat Abiola.
Speaking at the Conference, Alhaji Lekan Abiola expressed that it is unfortunate that the family do not hold a special ceremony to commemorate the death of his Mother since she was assassinated, as a mother who was so caring, and ready to support her children to any length and sadly was untimely sacrificed for the nation, because she was fighting to protect and supporting her Husband during the Abacha Regime.
He said, “I never thought Nigeria Government would be that wicked to kill mummy so soon, and unexpectedly as I felt, and even if you do not love her reaction towards the defense for her husband, I thought the government should have arrested her than going to the length of killing her”
“they shut down the family’s business, Newspaper and the farm”. He added,
Therefore, he appealed to the Federal government of Nigeria to take note of other Nigerians who lost their lives during the struggle, incase the Nigeria President Bola Ahmed Tinubu want to compensate those who sacrificed their lives for the nation, because among these people who lost their lives were Bread winners of the family.
While he requested that the federal government can also compensate his family by building a Presidential Library to immortalize late Chief MKO Abiola and wife.
Earlier from his Address, he said before his mother was killed, his brother, Biodun had been sending a message of cautions to the house,so as to guide and protect their mother from the political and government interference, because one cannot tell what the Abacha government can do over the issues around late chief MKO Abiola, if he will not kill their mother for defending and fighting for her husband freedom .
Afterwards, the news was later broken that their mother was killed along the 7up company axis in the year 1996 and the news was later spread across other children who were in the United States, Boston, England and more which brought unwanted sorrows to the family.
The Convener of the June 12 Movement, Veteran Comrade Olawale Okunniyi declared the MKO Abiola House as the Democracy Centre of Nigeria, and thereby called the Nigeria President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to be considerate at this point to give the heroes a Presidential Hilltop Villa/ Library, in recognition that the family had sacrificed their lives for the nation.
Saying that whatever request the movement has made today, was done not to fight the current government, but it is to remind the President Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu that negligence is not the way to go, for NADECO Apostle cannot be the Nigeria President and do nothing to compensate the MKO Abiola family.
Also, he described further on how Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu was part of the NADECO struggle and in all competence, he has the right and responsibilities to visit the MKO Abiola Residence for a proper inclusion on immortalising.
