Traffic in the city of Lagos during British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher’s official visit to Nigeria.
Margaret Thatcher was the first woman Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 1979 to 1990. In January 1988, Mrs Thatcher made her first ever prime ministerial trip to Nigeria after a three-day stop in Kenya.
Her visit was reportedly greeted with protests over her administration’s support for apartheid in South Africa. The demonstration took place in front of the headquarters of the Nigerian Labor Congress where union leaders burned the British flag. A small group of demonstrators also displayed anti-Thatcher banners outside the Lagos Airport when she flew in.
During her two-day visit, Mrs Thatcher visited several places. In Kano, she was met with friendly and “flag waving” crowds and was recieved by the emir who had invited her to a durbar, where she was treated to a horsemanship display by thousands of people.
