In her bid in supporting and advocating for women and girls in the tech world, The Women Entrepreneurs and Executive in Tech Summit (WEETS), held its 2023 edition of the tech summit in Lagos on September 14 focusing on women and girls breaking the glass ceiling and thriving in the digital technology world.
The Summit organised by Ugochi Emmaunel, is a platform that seeks to highlight opportunities available for women by bridging the digital divide while expanding new ideas on ICT and telecoms, thereby positioning them to effectively play a formidable role in the Nigerian tech space. It also recognize and celebrate the Women who are already blazing the trail in the Nigeria’s ICT ecosystem.
Tagged: ‘Breaking the Glass Ceiling for Women and Girls to Thrive in the Digital Economy’ was held at the Radisson Blu Hotel, Lagos.
The First Lady of Lagos State, Dr. Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu, represented by the wife of the former Speaker, Lagos State House of Assembly, Pastor(Mrs.) Mayowa Ikuforiji, highlighted the Lagos State Government role in providing an enabling environment for women’s tech ecosystem, stating, “We have seen so many Nigerians who are excelling in tech. With what Lagos State is doing in terms of partnership with Techups in the state and empowerment especially the girl child”.
Mrs. Ikuforiji also urges parents to allow their children focus more on learning how to invent rather than play around.
The convener WEETS, Ugochi Emmaunel, while speaking on the theme, said her aspiration for women and girls empowerment, no matter how small prompted the summit. In her words, “In today’s digital world, I don’t think women should be dependent, enhance it is important, for us as women to break that glass ceiling of being dependent on someone and make your money the little way you can.
Speaking on WEETS Foundation, Ugochi, noted it has been her dream even before the summit, which was motivated by her love for the empowering and training the girl child in tech innovations.”
Reuben Muoka, the Director of Public Affairs Nigeria Communication Commission (NCC), asserted that 90% of businesses has the input of technology. And propose that more enlightenment should be place in the ICT world for women to feel involve and secure.
He also urges men to support and encourage women into focusing more on the digital technology space.
The President Team Nigeria for Change, a social political organisation geared towards good governance in Nigeria, Chief Bestman Jumbo Nze, commended the convener and also encourage individuals to buy into the tech spaces as the government is opening up the tech spaces.
Teleola Kola-Edun representing Barrister Uju Catherine, noted that as a major supporter of female entrepreneurs, Uju Catherine, is committed to influencing, mentoring, and supporting other female folks in the tech up and she is proud of the convener WEET.
